Our Bed & Breakfast is located near the Staufenmauer. Our location is in the heart of a neighborhood rich in history, reflecting the city’s dynamic past.
The Staufenmauer – A Piece of Frankfurt’s History
The Staufenmauer is one of the oldest structures still standing in Frankfurt. Built in the 12th century under the Hohenstaufen dynasty, it served as a defensive wall to protect the burgeoning commercial city. Even today, well-preserved remnants of the wall offer a fascinating glimpse into Frankfurt’s medieval past.
The Jewish Ghetto and the Börneplatz Synagogue
Not far from our Bed & Breakfast was the ancient Jewish ghetto, established in 1462 by Emperor Frederick III. Despite harsh conditions and limited space, the Jewish community managed to create a thriving cultural and economic center. The ghetto was abolished in 1796, granting greater freedom to the Jews, yet traces of the past still remain.
A place of great significance was the Börneplatz Synagogue, built in 1882. Considered a symbol of Jewish life in Frankfurt, it was destroyed during the November 1938 pogroms. Today, a memorial located just below the Bed & Breakfast commemorates the community and its troubled history.
The Vaulted Cellar "Goldener Apfel"
In the immediate vicinity of our Bed & Breakfast, a historic vaulted cellar dating back to the early 19th century has recently been discovered, known as Goldener Apfel (Golden Apple). This cellar is located at number 11 on the Staufenmauer and now hosts an exhibition on Frankfurt’s Jewish history during that period. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the Jewish community’s struggle for emancipation and equality, while honoring its traditions.
The name Goldener Apfel originates from one of the five houses destroyed during the war against France. In 1809, Joseph Moses Rindskopf purchased the land and built an elegant stone structure, likely reusing materials from the original building. A keystone inscribed with “IMR 1809” commemorates the founder.
The exhibition is open on Thursdays from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free, but access is available only via a staircase, as the cellar is not equipped for individuals with limited mobility.
